iOS: Adjusting the settings on your HDTV and sound system make for a better entertainment experience compared to just using the default out-of-box settings. While we've posted guides on getting more out of your home theater and calibrating your HDTV , this interactive app from THX makes it all even easier.
To use THX tune-up, connect your iPad or iPhone to your TV or sound system, either wirelessly via Apple TV or with an Apple Digital AV adapter and HDMI cable. Then select the type of equipment you have. The app offers tools for adjusting aspect ratio, brightness, contrast, color, and tint, with narrated instructions.
You can test your sound system's setup to make sure your speakers are connected to the right output and that they're in phase (which means it's easy to tell where the sound is coming from). DVDs with the THX logo already have a calibration tool on them, but using your iPad or iPhone has a unique benefit: THX tune-up uses your device's camera to set color and tint, so you can point your device at the TV to see if it's adjusted correctly—no need for special filter glasses.
The app is free through February 4th and an Android version is due in the spring.
