The Recording Industry Ass. of America - defender of money grabbing luddite record labels and molester of talented artists* - has decided that allofmp3.com must pay for its terrible crime of abiding by Russian copyright law.

They're suing for every song downloaded from the Russian mp3 website by US citizens over a five month period this year. That's 11 million downloads. RIAA reckons that for every song downloaded - for roughly $1 - damages of $150 000 can be sought. That's $1.65 trillion in total, or to put it another way, roughly as much as the estimated GDP of Russia.

For those Xbox 360 owners who didn't also have an XP Media Center box, DivX streaming from programs like Transcode 360 were always a far reach. Now with TVersity, you can perform on the fly WMV transcoding and streaming from any XP machine.

All you have to do is install TVersity, set up the videos you want to share, and brows to your videos folder on your 360. You should see all the shared videos via TVersity, plus the "online videos", provided you have the right directshow filters. If you're looking for an all-in-one solution, check out the Helios H4000.

Wireless headphones are great in theory, but in practice they tend to be bulky and not really worth the snipping of wires. The problem is that you need to cram a Bluetooth receiver into something that's supposed to comfortably rest on your ears, which isn't that easy to do.

Apparently Sony realizes this, so they're working on a technology to send music signals directly through your body. Because the signal is sent through a tiny electrostatic charge, they can only fit 48 kbps into the transmission without it becoming a painful experience. Somehow I think that some audiophiles would love to brag about being able to withstand the pain of transmission to get hott 320 kbps quality listening, but who knows if Sony will be up for marketing to the masochists!

Due to Wembly stadium not being complete in time, the Robbie Williams concert has now been canceled. Hopefully it will be moved (nearby?) else some of my family are going to be very disappointed. Its not just the software industry that cant keep to a deadline or budget!

The ELP laser turntable reads LPs with lasers -- the manufacturer claims that the lasers can read "virgin" parts of the grooves that haven't been touched by needles and produce a better sound, and that the five laser read-head lets you skip forward and back across or within tracks as you would with a CD.

Two Tracking Laser beams are directed to the left and to the right shoulders of the groove of the record. Only the part of the beams that reach the groove are reflected to two PSD (Position Sensitive Detector) optical semiconductors. The part of the beams that fall on the land area of the record are deflected and not picked up by the PSD devices. The signals are sent to a microprocessor via analog to digital converters, then to servos to maintain the reader head position directly above the groove.

Two additional laser beams are directed at the left groove wall and the right groove wall just below the tracking beams. Modulation on the individual grooves is reflected to scanner mirrors and onto left and right photo optical sensors. The variations of the modulated light cause the audio sensors to develop an electrical representation of the mechanical modulation of the grooves. The entire sound reproduction chain is analog.

DJs are being warned they are breaking the law if they play digital copies of tunes without buying a £200 licence, even if the music is played off an Ipod or a laptop. Clubs are being warned they need to check digital DJs have the correct paperwork before employing them.

Recently several people I know including myself have started to create mp3 mixes of their favourite tunes. This is great, however, being a mix you lose all the track information which is a shame, especially if you want to burn the mix to CD for playing in the car. Car players generally always start playing mp3 from the beginning - and boy I cant listen to the first track of my mixes any more.

Well here's a solution - there are many tools to do this, but this is what I use:

mp3cue - its a WinAmp plugin

Here's a cue file I created for my Summer Mix 02
mix02.cue (1.05 KB)

Off you go now and fireup your copy of Nero and burn away...

For those of you without a set of decks (or record player if your really old skool) and would still like to keep upfront with dance music, might I suggest that you visit DJdownload.com.

They sell some really excelent tunes which release almost as soon as the first white labels and dub plates are cut. You can listen to previews as well but its not the same as grabbing a big stack of vinyl and spending the best part of your weekend in a tiny record shop.

Update:

My other favourite stores online are:

          Hard To Find Records
          Global Groove

Just completed some changes to my web site, if your reading this via my RSS feed you might like to fire up your browser - Firefox of course.

These controls were added to dasBlog without recompiling - pretty cool. I did however fix a number of bugs in dasBlog which I'll upload when totally complete - mainly to do with XHTML compilance.

TJ's summer party was great, had a real laugh but I'd like to apologize to those they noticed my mixing really sucked that night. Oh well - sometimes things just work out that way. I'd like to thank Koan for bringing her recording gear but it would have been a waste of 1s and 0s that evening. Keep the parties going TJ!

For those of you who think I'm strange in preferring to prepare for a gig over a night out at the local curry house deserve an explanation. Music, especially the vinyl kind, is a great passion of mine and when combined with the buzz and adrenaline rush associated with DJing live nothing really compares.

These days I take the opportunity to DJ live with both hands. The days of spinning tunes till 3am several times a week I'm afraid are probably over for me - unless there are any promoters out there? I just cant be bothered with the leg work these days - I just wanna play tunes.

I've just got my self a copy of Cakewalk and might have a go at remixing this winter or incorporating more live sampling/remixing in some of my online sets. Plus I promise I'll get the webcams over looking my 1210s soon. I might even splash out on this sampler - check out these demo videos - amazing stuff.

First, set Audacity to record in stereo. Open the Audacity preferences. In the “Audio I/O” section, change the number of recording channels from 1 (mono) to 2 (stereo).

Next, plug one end of a stereo cable into the “Line Out” or “Headphone” connector on your tape deck, minidisc player, mixer or stereo system. Plug the other end into your computer’s “Line In” connector.

Choose “Line In” as the input source on the Audacity toolbar, and press the Record button. While Audacity is recording, start playing your tape, record or disc. When you have captured the entire recording, press the Stop button.

Notes:

  • Do not plug stereo equipment into your computer’s “Microphone” port, which is designed for low-powered (“mic-level”) signals only. Use the “Line In” port instead.

  • Do not connect a turntable directly to your computer. The signal from a turntable is distorted; it must be corrected by passing it through a phono pre-amp or a receiver with a “phono” input.

After making a recording or editing a file in Audacity, follow these steps to save your work on an audio CD:

  1. Use the “Export as WAV” or “Export as AIFF” command to save your Audacity recording in a sound file.
  2. Use any CD-recording software (iTunes or Nero, for example) to burn this file to a CD.

To make a disc you can play in normal CD players, make sure to create a “music” or “audio” CD (not a “data” CD). Use CD-R discs, because some players cannot read CD-RW.

Some CD software will burn only 16-bit, 44.1KHz stereo sound files. If your CD recording software won't open your sound file, export the file again after choosing the following settings in Audacity:

  1. At the bottom of the Audacity window, set the Project Rate to 44100 Hz.
  2. In the File Formats preferences, choose WAV (16-bit...) or AIFF (16-bit...).
  3. If your project does not already contain a stereo track, choose “New Stereo Track” from the Project menu. (This will make Audacity export your recording as a stereo file.)

When I'm coding (especially at home) I listen to a very wide range of music. Depending on the stage of the project the genre varies. For example, design generally means classical, implementation leans toward dance/trance, but for the next few weeks I need to code at a serious pace. This means we need to go back to the 90's when we raced around the M25 in convoy looking for the latest illegal rave. That's right, when I need to code quickly I'm proud to don the white gloves and glow sticks - Its Happy 2B Hardcore. For the next 2 weeks solidstore will be streaming uplifting tunes to help bring this project in on time.

What do you listen to when coding? Leave a comment.

BTW: Is there a name for the law (like Moore Law) that states as soon as you buy new hard disks you will fill them? I've just increased my total mirrored storage capacity to 1.1 terabytes and I've filled 'em already! Its amazing how much space 48 days worth of hardcore vinyl can take up!

With the number of references to 'hardcore' in this blog, I cant wait to see what referral spam I get :-)

Thought I'd make a quick mention to the open-source project I've just started on SourceForge. Its called 'solidstore' after my gaming tag.

solidstore is an web based community multimedia jukebox written in ASP.NET. Multiple users can upload & publish their own collections of music, video, document & pictures either for private, shared and/or public access.

Anyone interested in helping out checkout SourceForge for details. Once things are more fleshed out we'll need more sexy artwork and translators. I'm hoping to have a working demo hosted here soon.

I've fallen in love. And her name is ...

Final Scratch 2

<drawl> She is a thing of beauty </drawl>

Once I've received my order, my girlfriend wont see me for days. Imagine, mixing all my records and mp3 via my radio station - now if I could only figure out a way to make a living at it! No longer will I need to carry my record cases - just my laptop! MP3's weigh a lot less. Harder to scratch as well!

But dont let this fool you into thinking I've gone totally digital - I still have vinyl acetate in my blood.

BTW the on-demand section of my radio station is almost coded up - just adding final touches, here's a small sampler:

U2 - How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb - removed

Added: As promised - On Demand Music
