Looks like someone's been busy this weekend; many, many people who've been cheating using modded maps are now banned from Halo 2 Matchmaking. A recent example can be found in this forum post by pwn4ge, a member of the PraetoriaGuard clan - they were cheated in a Containment game (they even filmed it).

If you are interested in photography, in particular, digital photography and wish to learn how to improve your images once there on your pc when I can recommend an excellant book (How to Wow) that I bought a couple of weeks ago. It has some great examples and tutorials on how to achieve effects using Photoshop.

Below is an example of hand colouring that I attempted. My grandfather used to do this by hand with paints after developing his own black & white photos in his darkroom. This was an original black & white photo taken by a professional photographer recently that I scanned in from a print.

Before                                                      After

More effects as I learn 'em!

Robo-Raptor

WowWee, maker of the RoboSapien and the RoboPet, has launched the RoboRaptor in the UK

This robotic dinosaur can perform full, bi-pedal gaits and can be playful, aggressive, or nervous. The RoboSapien can also control him with his powerful robot mind. Trust me, this demon can rip your stupid Furby to shreds and then excrete the pieces. Keep him away from your Barbies, as well.

The Bungie.net site is the online companion to the wildly successful Halo 2 video game for Xbox, released in November 2004 by Microsoft. The site also acts as the community hub for all things related to Bungie games. Built with the Microsoft .NET Framework, Bungie.net serves up more than 4 million pages per day, accumulating 300 gigabytes of online game statistics per month from more than 1 million games played daily. Deemed "Most Innovative Design" by IGN Entertainment in 2004, the site provides innovative ways for users to view game statistics and details as well as interact with each other through forums and team Web pages. The release of the Bungie.net site represented a milestone in online console game play. This case study provides insight into this accomplishment.

The latest attack allows an attacker equipped with specialized hardware to reset the pairing process and then record the resulting exchange of data. The brute force cracking algorithm can quickly use that data to find the PIN that secures either device. A password made up of 4 digits takes 0.06 seconds to break. Even a PIN made of 7 decimal digits only takes 76 seconds to break.

A couple days back, Microsoft announced Avalanche, a made-in-Redmond alternative to BitTorrent, the protocol that now takes the lion's share of Internet traffic. Bram Cohen, BitTorrent's creator, has posted an in-depth debunking of the assumptions made by the Avalanche paper.

Finally figured out why UltraEdit sometimes screws up xml files when edited. It’s not a bug.

They are writing an industry standard Byte Order Mark (BOM) header to Unicode files.

These screw up some Microsoft XML parsers including .NET and IE6. They don’t follow the industry standard!

Open the Advanced - Configuration - General dialog and scroll to section Load/Save/Conversions.

Set Automatically convert to DOS format, if necessary.
Enable Auto detect UTF-8 files.
Activate Save file as input format.

Turn off Write UTF-8 BOM header to ALL UTF-8 files when saved.

Turn off Write UTF-8 BOM on new files created within this program

Because you want all files as UTF-8 files, go to section Editing.
Enable Always create new files as UNICODE.

Change your settings now and save hours of wasted time.

The Superball prank has everything: a long set up, an incredible premise, and sweet, sweet release. The perpetrators, Gene and his work buddy, bought 2000 Superballs for $100. Instead of throwing them down a hall or eating them, they decided to create a Superball tsunami. Any prank that requires someone to try it out before the fact to confirm that it didn't hurt is a winner in our book.

The premise is simple: the pair created a firing tube, trapdoor ceiling tile, and a tripwire. The resulting torrent of Superballs freaks out their co-worker and provides minutes of WMV-encoded entertainment.

Thank you for all your submissions and thanks to you, Gene, for proving that rubber and potentially lethal trapdoors can still make us smile.

Made from a Real Squirrel(TM), this delightful little flask offers the heavy tippler a number of exciting opportunities to sneak drinks out of the corpse of a dead rodent. While some would question the value of such a delightful beverage container, I assure you that anyone who sees you sucking on the desiccated neck of an ex-squirrel will know you are a man of class and style. Perhaps the enterprising drinker can add a nice chain and wear the dead fellow around his or her neck?

Your Birthdate: November 1
Your birthday suggests that are executive ability and leadership qualities in your makeup. A birthday on day 1 of any month gives a measure of will power and self-confidence, and very often a rather original approach. This 1 energy may diminish your ability and desire to handle details, preferring instead to paint with a broad brush. You may be sensitive, but your feelings stay rather repressed.

Buying and selling gaming artefacts such as imaginary weapons is a booming business on the web.

The internet games section of Ebay saw more than $9m (£5m) in trades in 2003.

What Video Game Character Are You? I am a Defender-ship.I am a Defender-ship.

I am fiercely protective of my friends and loved ones, and unforgiving of any who would hurt them. Speed and foresight are my strengths, at the cost of a little clumsiness. I'm most comfortable with a few friends, but sometimes particularly enjoy spending time in larger groups. What Video Game Character Are You?

In my personal top ten of the world's most disgusting companies this week's highest entry is Vodafone who almost managed to supersede NTL:Home in their lead position. The reasons: greed and bad taste. What happened?

Every now and then I have the option to renew my mobile phone, and this time I went for the Sony Ericsson V800 -  already knowing that the "v" stands for "Vandalized by Vodafone". It's unbelievable - on the case alone they managed to place their logo four times - and it's not a simple screen print that you could rub off with a little nitro - no, removing them would mean to ruin the case permanently.

But what's worse is that they also run the phone on their own OS which means that also on the screens there is big-red Vodafone all over the place. You can replace most of those graphics with your own, but you cannot delete them from the phone's memory. They hijack one of the two main menu entries so you will always connect to their internet portal when you - maybe accidentally - click it. But well, it looks like that is the price that you have to pay for getting a discount on the phone.

Unfortunately that is not the end of the story. In their endless greed Vodafone has disabled one of the most common used functions - the ability to use mp3 files as ringtones. You can upload them into your phone, yes. You can also listen to them on the media player. But you are not allowed to use them as ringtone, alarm or as a contact identifier. Why not? Because Vodafone wants you to buy the ringtones from their portal. Buy ringtones? Do I look like a teenager or a brain-amputee? No way. But I'm not the first one to have that problem - Google reveals that probably every owner of this phone looks for a solution to this and until recently there has been a way to circumvent this:

In order for mp3s to be freely usable on the v800 they have to be packaged as DRM files. A DRM file is a wrapper that can be used to restrict or allow certain usage of its contents. Fortunately Sony Ericsson provides - or rather provided - developers with a DRM Packager Tool. This tool allows - no - allowed you to convert .mp3 files to .dm files. Of course something as useful as this was soon discovered and the link made its round through mobile forums all over the web with the result, that suddenly the tool officially is not available anymore on the Sony Ericsson site. In order to get it these days it seems like you have to visit dark backrooms of dubious sites or try to find someone who was lucky enough to download it whilst it was still available (like me).

Fortunately I discovered another way to make my mp3 files work as ringtones and as I haven't found this solution on any SE v800 related forum yet, here is how it works: Unlike Sony Ericsson Nokia has not yet surrendered to the Dark Side. And as developers for Nokia phones have to create DRM packages, too, this company also offers a tool to accomplish this task. The tool we need is part of the Nokia Mobile Internet Toolkit 4.1 - in order to download it you will have to register as a developer at the Nokia Forum, but that registration is free and currently open to everyone. After downloading it you will have to register the application to receive a serial number - so make sure that you enter a valid email adress.

The actual method to convert .mp3s to .dm files works like this:

  • launch the NMIT 4.1 application
  • Click on the "Digital Rights" link.
  • This will bring you to the DRM packager.
  • Click the radio button "Combined Delivery Lock (.dm) [1] - on the right side the "Specify Rights" screen will appear.
  • In this screen select the "Enable Play Rights" checkbox [2] in the "Play" tab. For our purposes it is not necessary to set any of the other options.
  • Click the "Load Content" button and select an mp3 from your collection.
  • Select File - Save from the top menu or press CTRL-S to save the DRM package as a .dm file.
  • Upload the .dm file into the "Sounds" folder of your v800 memory stick via the method of your choice (Bluetooth, USB, Infrared) . After uploading via USB make sure to unplug the cable in order to avoid file locking.
  • On your v800 go to to the "My Phone" menu, select "Sounds", search the title of the sound file you uploaded and select "More -> use as -> ringtone".
  • Done.

Yesterday we buried my nan, here's the eulogy I read at the service:

When we look around our family today we see that although Nan has died she is still with us in many different ways. Some of us look like her; others have inherited some characteristic of hers, yet more of us have a personality like hers. None of us though have that unique combination that made Nan so very special.

You can check the meaning of the word Nan in any dictionary but you won't find words to describe ours. Our Nan was so special, you see, that only those who loved her could find words to say how wonderful she was.

As children we thought that there was nobody like our Nan. She was the one who always stood up for us. She was the one who knew all our secrets. She was the one who was always delighted to see us. We were grown up before we realised how lucky we were.

She gave us an ideal childhood, the sort you read about in fairy tales. Visits to her were magical times where we could dress up in old-fashioned clothes, help with the Sunday roast, read our comics or go shopping for special treats. No matter how old we grew we were never too old for her welcoming hug.

Love was her trademark. Everywhere we went we knew that she was there waiting to hear from us, wishing us all the best. As we grew older there was a wonderful sense of security in knowing that we could always pick up the phone and that she would be thrilled to hear from us.

Nan was all that was best about family life.

There is no doubt that she was well loved. The numbers of people here today are a tribute in themselves. They are a tribute to her as a wonderful mother, sister, grandmother, neighbour, and cherished friend. We will all miss her sadly.

Nan helped everyone. She helped so many people that nobody could keep a count of her activities. Yet she always had time to talk to us. Nan was the most self-less, giving person you ever likely to meet who never liked anyone making a fuss over her.

To Granddad, she was everything. A cheerful and loving companion who was a tower of strength during their difficult times. Nan and Granddad’s love for each other was a shinning example to us all.

We'll miss Nan on family occasions. We'll miss her when something good happens. We'll miss her when we are sad.

Nan’s are special and none was more special than ours.
